Nature of request
Copy of an inquest made before Cambridge and Leycester whereupon the jurors say on oath that Garinus, abbot of St Albans in the time of King Henry II acquired the mill of Little Langley from Ralph Cheynduit. Garinus granted the same mill to William, Ralph's son and heir for 20s. per annum. The abbot's successors continued to receive the rent until Queen Eleanor acquired the manor and mill when her bailiff detained the rent. Following a suit made by Hugh, late abbot of St Albans, Edward II fully satisfied the abbot for arrears up to the 3rd year of his reign, but from then on it has been withdrawn, and that no abbot has received any recompense for the service and rent, and nor have they remised and quitclaimed them to any of the parties.
