Nature of request
Copy of a mandate from Aldeburgh to the sheriff of York Reciting that he and his associates have been assigned to hold an inquest touching the circumstances of the advowson of the church of St Sampson of York. On the part of the king he orders the sheriff that he bring before them at York on 2 August 1339 all such free and law-worthy men of the county by whom the truth of the matter concerning Woodhouse's rights to the advowson can be better known.
Nature of endorsement
Ralph de Hastynges, sheriff of York have entrusted the full return of this mandate to Holme, Stayngreve and Sowerby, to bring before Aldeburgh all and such men according to the form of the mandate, with whom the execution of the same mandate rests to make them respond as appears in a certain indented list attached to this mandate. And further the sheriff answers that the original writ is being attached to the mandate.
