Full description and record details

Reference
SC 8/11/537
Date
[1331-1334]
Description
Petitioners
Richard de Beausevall, Prior of Ogbourne St George.
Name(s)
de Beausevall, Richard
Addressees
King and council.
Occupation
Prior of Ogbourne St George
Nature of request
Beausevall requests that the king order that his chancellor send a writ under the great seal to the treasurer and barons of the Exchequer that they summon the justices to them and others of their council to examine the process and allegation (made in an earlier petition by Beausevall) concerning the obligation made under duress by William de Pont Eveque to Hugh le Despenser the younger, which sum is now being demanded by the treasurer and barons because of the forfeiture of Despenser. They request that they be discharged of the sum, and in the meantime the treasurer and barons cease their demand.
Nature of endorsement
It is ordered to the treasurer and barons of the Exchequer that they call all those justices and others as is demanded by the petition and hear the arguments of the abbot. And if they find that Pont Eveque be removable at the will of the abbot, and of such estate and condition that he could not charge the house of Bec or the church then they are to discharge the abbot and brothers and surcease from levying anything . . . pending the business there . . .
Places mentioned
Ogbourne St George, [Wiltshire].
People mentioned
William de Pount Evesque (Pont Eveque)
Hugh le Despenser the younger
Abbot of Bec-Hellouin.
Note
This petition can be dated to no earlier than 1331 when Beausevall was appointed by the abbot of Bec-Hellouin as his proctor-general in England, and seems unlikely to be later than 1334 (CPR 1330-4, p.184).
