Reference
SC 8/11/536
Date
[1334]
Description
Petitioners
Roger Lisewi (Lysewy).
Name(s)
Lisewi (Lysewy), Roger
Addressees
King.
Nature of request
Lysewi states that the abbot has claimed to the council for the reversion of the manor of Whitefield which his predecessors had leased to Weyvill for his life, and he is now dead. The abbot has proceeded to sue, but by this process the king's rights will be impaired, and Lysewi, to whom the king had granted the manor for his life, would be wrongfully kept from his estate. Lysewi requests that the king charge his council and justices that judgement should not be rendered to his prejudice or that of his estate without determining the defence and evidences that Lysewi would wish to say for the king and himself.
Nature of endorsement
Let this petition be sewn to the petition of the abbot which is answered and ordered into Chancery.
Places mentioned
Whytefeld (Whitefield), [Isle of Wight, Hampshire]
Lylle de Wyght (Isle de Wight), [Hampshire].
People mentioned
[Geoffrey], abbot of Quarr
John de Weyvylle (Weyvill).
Note
The petition is dated to 1334 by the heading in Rot. Parl., vol II, p.73, making this part of 'petitions in parliament in 8 Edward III', though this is a Hale transcript. As Lysewy received the grant only in June and August 1334, it must date to later this year if Hale's attribution is correct (CPR 1330-4, pp.549, 567).
