Description
Petitioners
John de Herlee, valet at arms.
Name(s)
de Herlee, John
Addressees
King and council.
Places mentioned
Nature of request
Herlee states that he has served the king's father and grandfather in their wars, and has spent all his time in their service, and is now greatly impoverished by the war and his lands wasted so that he requests that the king order by writ of Chancery to the treasurer and chamberlains of the Exchequer that he have payment in accordance with the bills of the Wardrobe which he is able to show, or a suitable assignment where he is able to be readily paid.
Nature of endorsement
The treasurer, barons and chamberlain of the Exchequer are commanded that when they have viewed the bills, if they find that the debt is still due, that then he should be paid or a suitable assignment made as soon as they are readily able.
Note
The petition is wrongly dated in Rot. Parl., vol II, p.72a which places this in a context of material dating to 1333. The writ issued in accordance with the endorsed response was issued on 1 November 1331 so the petition must date to mid to late 1331 (CCR 1330-3, p.381).
