Reference
SC 8/11/528
Date
[1324-c. 1331]
Description
Petitioners
Ralph de Normanville.
Name(s)
de Normanville, Ralph
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
Normanville shows that he has a seven-year lease on the manor of Halghton from Balderston and Shireburn. At Michaelmas last Holland came and entered the manor and took away all his goods and chattels that he could find there. He is now ousted, but has paid his farm to Deyvill until the present.
Nature of endorsement
He is to sue at the Exchequer.
Places mentioned
Halghton (Halton), [West Riding of Yorkshire].
People mentioned
Simon de Balderston
Robert de Shireburn
Robert de Holand (Holland)
Thomas Deyvill, keeper of Pontefract.
Note
The petition is dated to 1333 by the heading in Rot. Parl., vol II, p.70, though this is from a post-medieval transcript, so the exact date is unclear. In addition the context of the petition suggests a somewhat earlier date, as Balderston and Shireburn had been appointed by Edward II in March 1324 to settle the forfeited estates following the battle of Boroughbridge, and had had the power to make leases for seven years in these lands (see CFR 1319-27, p.265). Clearly Normanville had one of these leases from them. If he had the lease in 1324, then this should not be after 1331.
