Description
Petitioners
Prior and convent of Castle Acre.
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
The prior and convent show that the ancestors of the countess of Lacy gave them the tithes from Long Sutton which they have enjoyed until recently when Lestrange, who had married the countess only allowed them to collect the tithes on payment of a fine of £10. In the previous harvest the tithe corn was wasted in the fields, and they could only collect the remnant on the payment of another fine. Lestrange has also sequestered their barns and stacks by colour of sale. The prior and convent request hasty remedy by oyer and terminer for the great trespasses, or remedy in another manner that the king should ordain. In the meantime they request that the sheriff order the sheriff of Lincoln to make delivery of the corn in the granges and in stacks to the prior so that they can minister them as they ought to be able and were accustomed to do without secular sequestration, or the disturbance of the bailiffs of Lestrange.
Nature of endorsement
They should have an oyer and terminer of all things that seem like trespasses made against the peace by horrible deeds etc. by a fine to be made in Chancery before suitable justices.
Places mentioned
Castle Acre, [Norfolk]
Sutton in Holand (Long Sutton), [Lincolnshire].
People mentioned
[Alice de Lacy], Countess of Lincoln
Ebulo L'Estrange (Lestrange), husband of Alice de Lacy.
Note
The petition is dated to 1330 by the heading in Rot. Parl., vol II, p.31 which records that this is from a Hale manuscript of petitions in parliament of 4 Edward III at Westminster after the feast of St Katherine (25 November).
