SC 8/11/521
Date
[1330]
Description
Petitioners
John Ive, abbot of Faversham; Convent of the abbey of Faversham
Name(s)
Ive, John
Addressees
King and council.
Occupation
abbot of Faversham
Nature of request
Ive states that in the time of Edward II there was a plea moved and debate between Abbot Orfreiser and his convent. Orfreiser took Badlesmere into his council and rewarded him with a release for his life of his rents in Badlesmere, Sheldwich and Selling. The rent has been in arrears since the lands came into the king's hand following the death and forfeiture of Badlesmere, and for the last 4 years have been in the hand of the keepers of Badlesmere's heir. The abbot request that the king order his treasurer and barons that if it was found by the ministers of his progenitors by inquisitions taken before them that the rent was due to the abbot by right of his church after the death of Badlesmere then they ought to have it as they had it before, and the guardians should respond for their time.
Nature of endorsement
On this petition the treasurer and barons are to be ordered that they summon those who are to be summoned and hear the reasons and they should do what is right.
Places mentioned
Badlesmere, [Kent]
Sheldwich, [Kent]
Selling, [Kent].
People mentioned
John Orfreiser, abbot of Faversham
Bartholomew de Badelesmere (Badlesmere).
Note
The petition is dated to 1330 by the heading in Rot. Parl., vol II, p.31 which records that this is from a Hale manuscript of petitions in parliament of 4 Edward III at Westminster after the feast of St Katherine (25 November). This is probably a later petition than SC 8/11/520, which seems to be by Abbot John Orfreiser before he resigned in 1325. The petition here explains in greater detail that Badlesmere had received a life release of the rent, and that following his death and forfeiture the abbot and convent felt that they should again receive the rent and services.
