Full description and record details

Reference
SC 8/11/503
Date
[1328-1329]
Description
Petitioners
Geoffrey de Cotes, parson of the church of Fishlake.
Name(s)
de Cotes, Geoffrey
Addressees
King and council.
Occupation
parson of the church of Fishlake
Nature of request
Cotes shows that he had been presented to Fishlake by the king, and this had been challenged in the court in Rome by Vaurelli, who had obtained a provision from the pope. Vaurelli eventually obtained a writ of Chancery allowing him to proceed, despite Cotes having appeared before the king's council at the last parliament at Northampton and obtained a prohibition. Vaurelli and the executors of the bull proceeded against him in court Christian by which Cotes was excommunicated because he did not wish to be deprived of the church. Cotes requests that he has a writ of Chancery to the executors of a papal bull concerning the pope's presentation of Vaurelli to the church of Fishlake to revoke the sentence made on Cotes in court Christian and the process which they made in prejudice of the king and his crown, and that judgements rendered in his court are not annulled in a manner not in use in the times of the king's predecessors.
Nature of endorsement
The [rolls] of Chancery are to be seen, and the tenor of the patent of which the petition makes mention is to be brought before the council.
Places mentioned
Fishlake, [West Riding of Yorkshire].
People mentioned
[William Melton], Archbishop of York
[Adam of Winchester], prior of Lewes
Peter de Vaurell (Vaurelli), clerk.
Note
This petition would appear to date to 1328-1329 for it refers to the parliament at Northampton held in April 1328, it has a copy of the licence granted to Vaurelli appended to it which was from 25 August 1328, and must postdate the legal process begun by Vaurelli and the executors of the papal bull and their sentence referred to in this petition. It must, however, be earlier than Vaurelli's apparent success over Fishlake in October 1329 (CPR 1327-30, p.453).
