SC 8/10/496
Date
[? 1305]
Description
Petitioners
Robert de Veer (Vere), earl of Oxford.
Name(s)
de Veer (Vere), earl of Oxford, Robert
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
Robert de Veer states that Robert Aytrop and his ancestors had always held the manor of Aythorpe Roding of the earl and his ancestors for the service of two knights' fees. Robert Aytrop alienated it, and it came into the hand of the late Queen Eleanor; and the king, beyond his seisin, gave it by his charter to Guy Ferre, to hold of him and his heirs, and not of the chief lords of the fee. If the charter is not amended, the earl and his heirs will lose wardships, reliefs, escheats and other profits. He requests that the charter be amended, and that Guy might hold the manor of him and his heirs as previous tenants held of his ancestors.
Nature of endorsement
Coram rege. The king wishes that the charter be amended in the form requested.
Places mentioned
Rothing Aytrop (Aythorpe Roding), [Essex].
People mentioned
Robert Aytrop (Aythorpe)
Eleanor [of Castile], Queen of England
Guy Ferre.
Note
The response to SC 8/10/495 mentions an earlier petition which received a favourable response. It seems likely that this would be the petition, and that CPR 1301-1307, p.393-394, dated at Westminster, 5 November 1305, would be the response to SC 8/10/495, which would then have been presented at the autumn parliament of 1305. This one would have been presented at a previous parliament, not too long before: probably the Lent parliament of 1305. A pencil note on the guard of the petition seems to come to the same conclusion.
