Date

Description
Petitioners
Robert de Veer (Vere), Earl of Oxford.
Name(s)
de Veer (Vere), Earl of Oxford, Robert
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
Robert de Veer, Earl of Oxford states that his grandfather Hugh, whose heir he is, had view of frankpledge in his manor of Swaffham Prior in Cambridgeshire, as had all his ancestors from time immemorial; he leased this manor, with all its appurtenances including the view, to Roger de Walsham for term of life, but Roger, through negligence, allowed the sheriff to enter and hold the view: and thus the king is seised of it. He requests a remedy, that he might not be disinherited.
Nature of endorsement
Coram rege.He is to have a writ of Chancery to the Treasurer and Barons of the Exchequer, to institute an inquiry into the contents of the petition.
Places mentioned
Swafham (Swaffham Prior), Cambridgeshire.
People mentioned
Hugh de Veer (Vere), Earl of Oxford
Roger de Walsham.
Note
As the petition from the Hilary 1307 parliament mentions the inquisition, it is clearly later. CCR 1302-1307, pp. 482-483, dated at Lanercost, 1 February 1307, appears to be in response to it. A note on the guard of this petition dates it as? 1305 on the basis of CIM 1216-1307 p.539 (no.1996), where the writ authorizing the inquisition is dated 7 November 33 Edward I (1305) and the inquisition was held on the Monday after the Annunciation following (March 1306). As this would seem to be the inquisition requested by the endorsement, 1305 seems a likely date for the petition.
