Reference
SC 8/10/492
Date
[c. 1298-c. 1306]
Description
Petitioners
John de Gamages, abbot of the St Peter of Gloucester.
Name(s)
de Gamages, John
Addressees
King and council.
Occupation
abbot of the St Peter of Gloucester
Nature of request
The abbot of St Peter of Gloucester states that his abbey has always had the advowson of the church of St Ishmael in Wales, and that he recently made a presentation to that church, with the full agreement of the Bishop of St David's, who ordered his archdeacon to proceed with the institution, but Henry of Lancaster came with force and arms, drove out the clerks, the archdeacon and the parson he had presented, and held and hold the church by force. The abbot requests a writ to Henry to remove the lay force, or to any minister in those parts, as it is outside any county.
Nature of endorsement
The lord of the liberty is to be ordered by writ of Chancery to remove the lay force.
Places mentioned
St Ishmaels, [Pembrokeshire, Wales]
Wales.
People mentioned
[David Martin], Bishop of St David's
Henry of Lancaster.
Note
CPR 1301-1307, p.429, dated at Wolvesey 21 April 1306, is permission to elect a new abbot given to the monks of St Peter's, after the death of John de Gamages. That he is the abbot mentioned here can be seen from an entry on the same page, dated at Wolvesey, 28 April 1306, where Robert de Bardelby is presented to the church of St Ishmaels, while St Peter's is in the king's hand. (CPR 1301-1307, p.430 (dated Wolvesey, 3 May 1306) is the king's assent to the election of John Thoky as abbot, and CPR 1301-1307, p.432 (dated at Farnham, 16 May 1306) is the instruction to the escheator to restore the abbey's temporalities to him.) Thus this petition must be dated 1306 at the latest, and, as Henry of Lancaster was born c. 1281, cannot be much before 1298.
