Nature of request
The barons of [the Port of] Rye state that the king has granted to them, by his charter, a fair and market in their town, the fair to take place on the eve, day and morrow of the Nativity of Our Lady, but that the people of the country go to sea to fish at that time of year, with the result that the fair is greatly impoverished. They request that their charter might be renewed, allowing them to hold the fair on the eve, day and morrow of the Assumption of Our Lady instead, which would not be to the prejudice of the king or of anyone else.
