Reference
SC 8/10/476
Date
[1284-1307]
Description
Petitioners
John Peverel.
Name(s)
Peverel, John
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
John Peverel states that he is being distrained for the debt owed to the king from the lands and tenements that belonged to Laurence de Lescheker, although he holds none of these lands - as has been found by an inquisition held in Essex by William de Carlton, and on account of which it was granted in the Exchequer that the distraint taken from John was to be released, and that Laurence's lands and tenements were to be charged to those who hold them, and that he was to be quit. He requests that Laurence's lands and tenements be charged as they were before.
Nature of endorsement
He is to go to the Treasurer and Barons of the Exchequer, and what should be done is to be done there; and he is to have a writ of Chancery addressed to them on this matter.
Places mentioned
Essex.
People mentioned
Laurence de Lescheker (Exchequer)
William de Carlton.
Note
A John Peverel of Essex, who might be our petitioner, is attested at various dates (July 1290 (CCR 1288-1296 p.93), May 1292 (CCR 1288-1296 p. 230) and June 1303 (CCR 1302-1307, p.39)). CCR 1288-1296 p.230 shows that he is the husband of Beatrice, one of the sisters and heiresses of Simon of the Exchequer, son and heir of Laurence of the Exchequer (CCR 1288-1296 p.162), which might explain why it is thought that he holds Laurence's lands. Laurence of the Exchequer seems to have died c. 1284: CPR 1281-1292 p.132 (grant of custody of his lands during minority of the heirs to Richard de Bosco) is dated 18 September 1284, and there are two provisions for dower to his widow Gunnora, dated 5 May 1284 and 15 September 1284, in CCR 1279-1288 pp.265 and 276. The petition has therefore been dated 1284-1307, although the handwriting would suggest that it belongs towards the end of that period.
