Gervase Alard requests that consideration be given him for his service to the king, in Gascony (with the king's brother Edmund), Flanders, Scotland, Normandy and everywhere else where the king has been at war, as he is growing old and has spent most of his money in the king's service, and has received nothing except £4 from the hands of Ralph le Coffrer at Ross in Galloway and a horse worth 4 marks from the king. If this does not please the king he requests a little piece of land at Pevensey of the fee of the barony of the Eagle, called the Island, which he should be given, as he had previously purchased it from the right heirs, and was deforced of it in the time of Peter of Savoye and since.

CPR 1301-7, p.469 may be a response to this petition, in which case it may date from c. 1306, but the attribution is uncertain and the dates ascribed here reflect what is said in the petition about the wars of Edward I.
