Description
Petitioners
Abbot and convent of Melrose.
Addressees
King.
Nature of request
The abbot and convent of Melrose make two requests:1) They state that Hugh of Cressingham, then treasurer of Scotland, bought 55 sacks of wool from them and paid them, on behalf of the king, to merchants of the society of the Frescobaldi, and that they have a letter of obligation for this wool. They ask the king for his grace, and to declare his will on this.2) They state that when Osbert de Spaldington was sheriff of Berwickshire, a proclamation was made that wools and hides were to be taken, throughout the country, to the nearest port, so they had 14 sacks of wool and a last of hides taken to Berwick, which Osbert took for the king's use. They request the king's grace on this.
Nature of endorsement
To these petitions and to all other similar petitions, this answer is given: that they are to have a writ to the Chamberlain of Scotland, that he is to account with all these creditors both for wools and for hides and other things taken for the king's use in the time of Hugh de Cressingham and Osbert de Spaldington, and when he has accounted with them, he is to inform the king of the aforesaid debts at the next parliament.
