Nature of request
John Comyn, Earl of Buchan, states that the law and custom of Scotland is that chief lords should have the custody of the lands of idiots, and that Ralph, son of Ralph de Lasceles, who holds of him by homage and fealty the land of Balmonth and other lands in Fife (which the king has given to William le Vavazour), is held to be an idiot. He requests custody of Ralph, so that he might ordain - with the closest kin of Ralph to whom his inheritance cannot descend - for Ralph's estate, according to the aforesaid usage and custom.
Nature of endorsement
Before the council, and let William le Vavazour be called there.The king's Lieutenant and Chamberlain are to be ordered to inquire into the laws and customs of Scotland in this case, and to inform the king about this.
