Description

Walter le Barbere (Barber) of London.
Name(s)
Barbere (Barber), Walter
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
Walter le Barbere states that he took a burgage in Berwick-upon-Tweed by livery of the English burgesses, who had been appointed by the king to apportion and arrent the town, and was seised of this burgage, and his name entered in the Domesday Book. He appointed one Walter le Clerk, who was with Walter de Agmondesham, then Chancellor of Scotland, to sue for and obtain a charter, who treacherously substituted his own name in this charter. When Walter de Agmondesham learned of this, he expelled him from his service, and John de Sandale, the current Chamberlain, has taken the burgage into the king's hand because he has discovered by inquisition that Walter le Clerk entered and held it by deception. He requests that he might have the burgage, paying as much as it is arrented for.
Nature of endorsement
All of these before the Keeper and Chamberlain except for the three at the beginning. The parties are to be called before the Keeper, Chamberlain and Chancellor of Scotland, and when the arguments on either side have been heard, justice is to be done, and they are to have a writ.
