Description
Petitioners
Reginald le Chien (Cheyne).
Name(s)
Chien (Cheyne), Reginald
Addressees
King.
Nature of request
Reginald le Chien, whose lands have been burnt and destroyed three times, and who has been imprisoned three times for his loyalty to Edward I, states that Alexander III, when he knighted him, granted him from his chamber twenty pounds of annual fee, until he could be provided with land to that value. He received this fee from King Alexander throughout his lifetime, and also from Edward I when Scotland was in his keeping; and afterwards, to discharge himself of this fee, King John provided him with a land called Dr[rest of name missing in filing hole] in Moray, worth only about ten pounds annually. He has been expelled from this land by John de Weston and James de Dalileye, Edward I's clerks, and requests that he might either have it back, or be paid his fee.
Nature of endorsement
This is to be inquired into and his charter is to be examined. And he is to have a writ to the king's lieutenant in Scotland, to inquire both into the fee granted him by King Alexander, and his possession of it, and into the value of the land he requests. And the lieutenant is to inform the king at his next parliament.
