Full description and record details

Reference
SC 8/9/437
Date
[c. 1299]
Description
Petitioners
John de Erleye (Earley).
Name(s)
de Erleye (Earley), John
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
John de Erleye states that he is heavily distrained for the relief for his father, Philip de Erleye, although he is ready to make satisfaction to the king according to the tenancy that he holds of the king in chief, and as the Exchequer records can show that his ancestors did.
Nature of endorsement
A writ is to be issued in Chancery that the escheator is to inquire in person into John's tenure, and when the inquisition has been held he is to inform the Treasurer and Barons of the Exchequer. And the books and rolls of the Exchequer are to be searched, and the king informed at the next parliament. And in the meantime he is to have respite.
People mentioned
Phillip de Erleye (Earley), father of petitioner.
Note
Dated? c.1301 on guard, with reference to CCR 1296-1302 pp 433, 525, CIM 1219-1307 no. 1054, and E 195/11/8. CCR 1296-1302, p.274 is dated at Leeds 26 September 1299, and may be in response to this petition (although some caution is needed: at least 2 John de Erles are mentioned in CCR 1296-1302). CCR 1296-1302, p.433 is dated at Lincoln, 24 February 1301, and CCR 1296-1302 p.525 is dated at Devises, 26 April 1302 - these do seem to refer to the petitioner, and possibly to be the final result of this petition. As the inquisition and reporting back to parliament would probably take some time, I think that c.1299 would be a reasonable date for this petition. The writ for CIM 1219-1307 no. 1054 is dated at Winchester, 20 January 1276, and the inquisition was held on the Saturday after the Purification following.
