Description
Petitioners
Ninety-five poor people of London.
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
Ninety-five poor people of London request payment of a debt of a hundred and fifty pounds sterling which the king owes them for Gascon mercenaries sent to Scotland, who charged the wages for their provisions in the city of London to the petitioners. By instruction of the king's council, and on the command of John de Bretaigne, Amaneu de Lebret, John de Drokenesford, John de Sandale and Ralph de Manton, the king's wages were charged to the house of Manekyn le Heaumer, through an indenture between the king's council and Manekyn, Alan de Suffolk, Walter Francois, William de Hallingbir', Richard le Geynturer and Richard le Barber, until a certain date, contained in the king's letters patent to Manekyn and his colleagues, after which date the petitioners were to be paid; but the king later sent another letter, sealed with his great seal, asking Manekyn and his colleagues to wait, and to keep the wages until the following Easter: which they did, to the great impoverishment of the petitioners, some of whom are reduced to beggary.
Nature of endorsement
The sheriffs of London are ordered by the treasurer and council that in the presence of John de Drokenesford, the keeper of the king's wardrobe, they are to satisfy the same poor men of London for the money contained in this schedule from the first issues of the farm of London; and the sheriffs are to have a tally for this in the Exchequer. And a writ of Chancery is to be sent to the sheriffs of London on this.
