SC 8/9/422

Description
Petitioners
Adam le Armurer (Armourer); Gunnora le Armurer (Armourer), wife of Adam le Armourer.
Name(s)
Armurer (Armourer); Armurer (Armourer), Adam; Gunnora
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
Adam le Armurer and Gunnora his wife state that the king gave and granted to Aymer de Cestre, Gunnora's brother, whose heir she is, a burgage with appurtenances in Berwick-upon-Tweed, for twenty shillings a year for all services, as her charter, which she has of the king's gift, attests. But the mayor and bailiffs of Berwick and the parson of Ford have charged this burgage with four marks per annum, and are distraining the tenement for this. Adam and Gunnora have often come to the King's court, and have twice purchased a writ to the mayor and bailiffs to stop this distraint, and a writ to Walter de Teye, formerly keeper of Berwick, and now a writ to John de Segrave, keeper of Berwick and to John de Sendal, for them to do justice in this matter. But the mayor and bailiffs have not stopped their distraint - indeed the mayor, on one occasion when Gunnora brought the king's writ against him, said that the king could not give or sell the farms of that burgage, and that his charter was made of butter. They request a remedy, as they are impoverished by this business.
Nature of endorsement
They are to have a writ as before to the keeper and chamberlain of Scotland that they are to do justice to them, or inform the king why they have not done so before.
