Date
[1302-1307]
Description
Petitioners
Heirs of master William de Seynt Romyn (St Remy).
Addressees
King.
Nature of request
The heirs of master William de Seynt Romyn state that they have complained in parliament about various grievances and wrongs done them by Henry, prior of Wenlock, John de Newent and other ministers of Otto de Graunson, and the king has appointed justices to try their complaints and those of other people from the Channel Islands; but nothing has been done. The heirs, and the other poor people of the Channel Islands, request the appointment of justices not tainted by connections with Otto de Graunson or his ministers, to enquire into and determine these and other wrongs, committed by these ministers, as they have not been able to have justice from justices who have been Otto's ministers for eight years. They also request that William de Graunson, Otto's attorney, be ordered to have the prior of Wenlock and John de Newent, who are parties in the plea, appear before the justices when they come.
Nature of endorsement
[None: endorsement written on SC 8/9/420]
Places mentioned
Les Ildes (Channel Islands).

Note
Dated between the date of the attached commission (SC 8/9/420) and the death of Edward I (7 July 1307), which agrees with the date given on the guard of 'after 1302,? 1305' dated with reference to the SC 8/9/420 and the other petitions. CCR 1296-1302, pp.591-592 is dated at Westminster, 5 August 1302, so is previous to this complaint. CPR 1301-1307, p.215, the appointment of justices in Eyre, is dated at St Andrews 15 March 1304, and could provide a terminus ad quem.
