Nature of request
The community of the town of Stamford state that William Humet held the town, with various franchises which they list, by gift from William the Conqueror, and in the time of King John, when the Normans had to chose between their estates in Normandy and in England, he chose Normandy and left England, taking the charter for these franchises with him. The town has used these franchises from time immemorial, until the last Eyre at Lincoln, when they were taken into the king's hand because they did not have the charter. They ask that they might have their franchises back for the future.

Coram toto consilio.The articles of the liberties which they request are to be examined by R le Bub' and others appointed for this, and it is to be shown to the Treasurer and Barons of the Exchequer, and they are to take council on this.

Dated by reference to surrounding petitions, both in the file and in Rot. Parl. I. JRS Phillips (PROME, Appendix of Unedited Petitions, 1307-1337) says that these petitions 'all belong to the end of the reign of Edward I, with a heavy concentration in the year 1305'. The date assigned here assumed a wide interpretation of those dates.
