Full description and record details

Reference
SC 8/9/409
Date
[1297-1300]
Description
Petitioners
Richard de Lue (Luda), clerk, formerly Chamberlain of the Exchequer.
Name(s)
de Lue (Luda), Richard
Addressees
King and council.
Occupation
clerk, formerly Chamberlain of the Exchequer
Nature of request
Richard de Lue states that he was a Chamberlain of the Exchequer for more than five years, but was removed from that office by procurement of the Archbishop of Canterbury, because he took the Archbishop's corn in Kent and elsewhere to send to Gascony for the king's use, and also for hatred, and by procurement of John de Cobham. The king has sent a letter under his privy seal, requesting that Richard remain in office, if the Treasurer considers it appropriate for the king, and he requests that this be proved by the same letter, which is in the keeping of the Marshal of the Exchequer. As he has served the king well for more than fifteen years in the Wardrobe and the Exchequer, and as he has lost more than two hundred marks of rent, he requests that he might have this office or another, at the king's pleasure.
Nature of endorsement
He is to have a writ of Chancery to the treasurer and barons of the Exchequer that they are to put into execution the command previously sent to them on his behalf, or give the reason why.
Places mentioned
Kent
Gascony, [France].
People mentioned
[Robert Winchelsey], Archbishop of Canterbury
John de Cobham.
Note
About twenty-one years earlier than SC 8/9/407, as noted on that petition, and correct by the length of service Richard claims on each petition. If this is so, this puts this one at about 1297: so quite soon after Richard's removal from office, which occurred because of his seizure of grain in 24 Edward I (20 November 1295-19 November 1296), according to SC 8/9/407. As he has already petitioned once, a couple of years' leeway would seem reasonable. This makes it earlier than the date of 'prob. 1306-7' given on the guard, on the basis that it seems to be 'temp Ed. I' and 'prob. 34 or 35'.
