Full description and record details

Reference
SC 8/9/407
Date
[1318-1320]
Description
Petitioners
Richard de Lue (Luda).
Name(s)
de Lue (Luda), Richard
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
Richard de Lue, who has served the present king and his father faithfully for thirty-six years and more, in the wardrobe, the Exchequer and elsewhere, both at home and overseas, states that in the twenty-fourth year of Edward I's reign, he and William Trussel, sheriff of Kent were assigned to take grain and other victuals from the Archbishop of Canterbury to provision the king's army in Gascony; but the archbishop, through malevolence, had Richard summoned before him, and deprived him of two hundred marks of rent which he had in his jurisdiction. Richard has pursued this matter at the court of Rome and elsewhere for twenty-two years; he now requests rent in the archbishopric of York, or some other means of support elsewhere, for his long service.
Nature of endorsement
Coram rege.It pleases the king to help him when he is able to.
Places mentioned
Kent
Gascony, [France]
Rome, [Italy].
People mentioned
Edward I, king of England
William Trussel, sheriff of Kent, Robert [Winchelsey], Archbishop of Canterbury.
Note
Dated on petition to? 1322, with reference to CPR 1321-1324, p. 141, which is dated at York, June 25 1322, or '1320 cf. rest of file'. It also says 'Apparently about 21 years later than 409 q.v.' But Richard says that he has been suing for twenty-two years since 24 Edward I (20 November 1295-19 November 1296): which would put this petition at 1318. This is confirmed by the List of Sheriffs, which states that William Trussel was sheriff of Kent between 5 May 1296 and 21 April 1298. Given that the king's response is that he will help him when he can, and that he may well have done something else for him before giving him this living, Date assigned to this petition privileges an early date, roughly 1318-1320.
