Nature of request

Robert de Askeby states that he brought a writ of utrum against Laura, widow of Gilbert de Gaunt, concerning twenty acres of marsh in Hale, which she holds and which his predecessor, Nicholas de Seint Quyntin, leased by indentured writ, in the seventeenth year of the present king's reign to the late Gilbert, to hold for life, the land returning afterwards to Nicholas or his successor and the church. Laura answered before the justices of Common Pleas that she could not answer without the king, claiming that the lands were part of the manor of Heckington, assigned to her in dower by the king. So the justices have stayed proceedings, until the king declares his will. He requests that the king order them to proceed, or that the writ and other evidence he has be examined by the council, and that his land be returned to him, if it is found that he is right.

Nature of endorsement

Coram toto consilio.The justices are to be ordered by a writ of Chancery to proceed to take the jury, but that they are not to render justice until the king has been consulted.
