Description
Petitioners
Robert Wyvil, Bishop of Salisbury.
Name(s)
Wyvil, Robert
Addressees
King and council.
Occupation
Bishop of Salisbury
Nature of request
The bishop of Salisbury states that he and his predecessors have from time immemorial had free chase in the wood of Bisshopesbere, and in all their woods and lands and the lands of their men and tenants in Windsor forest until in an Eyre of the Forest in Berkshire in the time of Edward I the wood and free chase were taken into the king's hand for a trespass of Robert, bishop of Salisbury until the bishop had made fine to have the wood back. After that the bishops continued to enjoy the woods and free chance until the third year of the present king's reign, when Roger, then bishop, claimed the franchise in an eyre of the forest, and, because he could produce no better title than that he had enjoyed it from time immemorial, it was taken into the king's hand. He requests that all previous challenges and impeachments concerning the free chase be annulled, and that it be handed over to him. He also requests a charter for this right - since, as his predecessor had the wood, which is the principal right, for the fine that he paid, the accessory right of the franchise should be delivered too.
Nature of endorsement
The record and process of the last Eyre of the Forest in Berkshire should be brought into Chancery, and the reason for the seizure into the king's hand; when they have been examined, the Justice of the Forest is to be called if necessary, and justice done according to the Assize of the Forest.
Places mentioned
Bisshopesbere wood [unidentified], [Berkshire]
Windsor Forest, [Berkshire]
People mentioned
Robert [Wickhampton], bishop of Salisbury
