SC 8/8/393
Date
[1319-1322]
Description
Petitioners
Ralph de Epplingdenn (Eppleton).
Name(s)
de Epplingdenn (Eppleton), Ralph
Addressees
King.
Nature of request
Ralph de Epplingdenn states that he holds the manor of Felling which Walter of Selby forfeited for his adherence to the Scots, by gift of the king. The manor is held of the Prior of Durham for various services, and the prior is distraining Ralph for services which he says are in arrears, both from when the manor was Walter's and from when it was in the king's hand. He requests a remedy.
Nature of endorsement
It seems to the council that the tenant should not be burdened with the time when the king had the manor; and so the prior is to sue to the king for his time, if he thinks it will help him. And the tenant is to have a writ that he is not to be distrained for the king's time.
Places mentioned
Felling, [County Durham]
Scotland.
People mentioned
Walter de Selby
Prior of Durham.
Note
CPR 1317-1321 p.335 (the grant of the manor to the petitioner) is dated at York, May 24 1319, so the petition cannot be earlier than this. Rot. Parl. vol. I, p.431, no. 2, which JRS Phillips (PROME, Appendix of Unedited Petitions, 1307-1337) dates to 1325, says that Ralph de Epplingdenn was forfeited at Boroughbridge, so it cannot be later than 1322. Fraser dates it to 1319-1323 - why she is allowing a year after Boroughbridge is not clear. The commission in CIM 1307-49 pp.219-220 (no. 880) is dated 6 December 19 Edward II (1325) and the inquisition was held on the eve of Trinity following (May-June 1326). This relates to the petition edited in Rot. Parl. vol. I, p.431, (no. 2).
