Occupation
abbot of Welbeck
Nature of request
The abbot of Welbeck states that his grange of Gladthorp is partly within Sherwood Forest and partly without, but the chief messuage without, and that he holds this grange in pure and perpetual alms, of the gifts of their feoffors, as shown by their charters and confirmed by King John. He is now distrained for puture for the foresters, whereas he and his predecessors and their feoffors have always been quit of this. He requests a writ to the keeper of Sherwood Forest, that he might not be charged contrary to the form of his feoffment and the king's confirmation.
Nature of endorsement
Let a writ be issued to the justices of the forest that, when they have examined the charters and enquired into the truth of the contents of the petition, on the oath both of knights etc., who are not suspected etc., they are not to charge the abbot with puture contrary to the tenor of his charters and other than used to be done.
