Nature of request

John de Daggeworthe states that his ancestors were enfeoffed in fee, of the king's progenitors, of the office of usher of the Exchequer, together with that of crier of Common Bench and marshal of all the eyres of England, within franchise and without, including eyres of the forest, taking the fees and profits belonging to these serjeanties, and traces his right to this office by descent from Laurence del Eschekere through his son Simon. However, Aymer de Valence and his companions, in the last eyre of the forest in Essex, at Stratford at Bow, claimed that they could appoint a marshal at will and take the profits, and kept John, who claimed his office before them, from his rights; and they continued this accroachment until Aymer de Valence's death. John requests that the king send a writ to the treasurer and barons and chamberlains of the exchequer, to have the rolls of eyres of the forest in Essex searched, from the time of Henry III and Edward I, and before, to establish of what estate the kings and the serjeants, his ancestors, were seised in the office of marshal in the ancient eyres of the forest, in Essex and elsewhere.

Nature of endorsement

With regard to this petition, he is to sue a writ in Chancery to have the record of the last eyre of the forest in Essex brought before the council.
