Date

Description
Petitioners
John de Daggeworthe (Dagworth).
Name(s)
de Daggeworthe (Dagworth), John
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
John de Daggeworthe states that his ancestors were enfeoffed in fee, of the king's progenitors, of the office of usher of the Exchequer, together with that of crier of Common Bench and marshal of all the eyres of England, within franchise and without, taking the fees and profits belonging to this bailiwick and serjeanty. The right to this office descended from Laurence del Eschekere, his grandfather, to his son Simon; he died without an heir of his body, and the office descended to his three sisters, Maud de Daggeworthe, mother of the petitioner, from whom he has inherited a third, by permission of the king and by his charter; Laura Payesorere, who died seised of another third, which he has inherited; and Beatrice Peverel, whose right descended to her son Hamo Peverel, from whom John has purchased it, with the king's permission and charter. However, in the last eyre at the Tower of London, before Henry de Staunton and his companions, Hamo de Chikewelle, mayor of London, and the community of the city, wrongly claimed the office of Marshal, and made their own appointment. He requests that the king send a writ to the treasurer and barons and chamberlains of the exchequer, to have the rolls of eyres searched, from the time of king Henry III, and before, and since, to establish of what estate the kings and the serjeants, his ancestors, were seised in the office of marshal in the ancient eyres, in London and elsewhere.
Nature of endorsement
With regard to this petition, he is to sue a writ in Chancery to have the record of the last eyre of the Tower of London, from the time of Hervey de Staunton, brought before the council.

Dated to?1324 on the guard, with reference to Hamo de Chigwell. He is noted as mayor of London on 10 June 1320 (CPR 1317-1321 p. 489) and on 28 September 1326 (CPR 1324-1327 p. 322) JRS Phillips (PROME, Appendix of Unedited Petitions, 1307-1337) says that these petitions probably all do belong to 18 Edward II, although there is no indication that they were presented either at the non-parliamentary assembly of October 1324 or the parliament of June 1325.
