SC 8/8/381
Date
[c. 1320]
Description
Petitioners
John de Dagworth; Laura Peisorer [Peysorer].
Name(s)
de Dagworth; Peisorer, John; Laura
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
John de Dagworth and Laura Peisorer state that they hold a grand serjeanty of the king in chief, which from ancient times has brought with it the office of usher of the Exchequer, together with that of crier of Common Bench and marshal of all the eyres of England, and that they claimed this office before the justices in the last eyre at the Tower of London, but the mayor and aldermen of London made representations to the justices and had the office without profits, while the justices' marshals took the fees. John and Laura brought their writ concerning this serjeanty before the same justices, but could not have record or judgement; so they request a remedy from the king. They also put their claim to the eyre of the forest at Stratford before Aymer de Valence and his colleagues, and it was denied. So he delivered his writs, but still cannot have seisin of his serjeanty; and again requests a remedy and aid from the king.
Nature of endorsement
With regard to the first petition, he is to have a writ to have the record of the eyre of the Tower of London brought before the justices of the king's pleas etc. With regard to the second petition, coram rege.
Places mentioned
London
Estratford (Stratford at Bow), [Middlesex].
People mentioned
Mayor and aldermen of London
Aymer de Valence [earl of Pembroke].
Note
As the two petitioners here seem to claim to hold the whole serjeanty between them, this seems to date this petition from after John's purchase of the third part from Hamo Peverel, the pardon for which, in CPR 1317-1321, p.495, is dated 7 August 1320. However, this petition must be earlier than SC 8/8/383, which seems to be from 1324-5, as by then Laura Peisorer [Peysorer] is dead.
