SC 8/8/372

Description
Petitioners
John de Crauden, prior of Ely.
Name(s)
de Crauden, John
Addressees
King and council.
Occupation
prior of Ely
Nature of request
The Prior of Ely claims that he has been wrongly amerced in a hundred pounds, because it was stated before John de Berewyk and his companions in the last eyre at Ely, in time of vacancy in the bishopric, that one Robert le Carpenter of Ely, clerk, who had been convicted in the previous Eyre, before John Devaus and William de Saham, and had been delivered to the prior's prison, had escaped. The present prior has previously delivered a bill in parliament, and had the tenor of the indictment brought before the king, and stated that Robert had never been delivered to his predecessor, nor had he escaped, nor did the prior have custody of the spiritualies during a vacancy. A writ was sent to the treasurer and chamberlains to search the rolls, and they found no mention of Robert. The prior has a day at the octave of Michaelmas, to try his case by a jury, and requests a writ to the barons of the Exchequer to cease from demanding the hundred pounds until the case is determined.
Nature of endorsement
Because Geoffrey le Scrop attests that the plea is pending before the king he is to have a writ of surcease during the plea.

Ely, [Cambridgeshire].
People mentioned
John de Berewyk (Berwick), justice
Robert le Carpenter of Ely, clerk

Note
Date given on the evidence of Rot. Parl. JRS Phillips (PROME, Appendix of Unedited Petitions, 1307-1337) says that these petitions probably all do belong to 18 Edward II, although there is no indication that they were presented either at the non-parliamentary assembly of October 1324 or the parliament of June 1325. The last vacancy in Ely was between May and October 1316.
