Full description and record details

Reference
SC 8/8/369
Date
[? 1315-? 1321]
Description
Petitioners
Peter de Weaverthorpe, Prior of Bridlington.
Name(s)
de Weaverthorpe, Peter
Addressees
King and council.
Occupation
Prior of Bridlington
Nature of request
The prior of Bridlington states that William de Vaus, at the time when he was the keeper of the honour of Knaresborough, disseised Gerard, his predecessor, of five hundred acres of moor and pasture belonging to his manor of Blubberhouses, of which the king has been seised from then until now. He requests a remedy.
Nature of endorsement
Faithful people are to be appointed in chancery to enquire, in the presence of the current constable, into the truth of the contents of the petition and other necessary articles, and when the inquisition has been returned in chancery the king is further to be informed.
Places mentioned
Bridlington, [East Riding of Yorkshire]
Knaresborough, [West Riding of Yorkshire]
Blubberhouses, [West Riding of Yorkshire].
People mentioned
Gerard [of Burton], formerly prior of Bridlington
William de Vaus (Vaux), formerly keeper of the honour of Knaresborough.
Note
If the petition's reference to Gerard of Burton as being the then present prior's predecessor means his immediate predecessor, this petition must date to 1315-1321 when Peter of Weaverthorpe was prior. The date given on the evidence of Rot. Parl. JRS Phillips (PROME, Appendix of Unedited Petitions, 1307-1337 Rotuli Parliamentorum I, pp. 416-429, no. 26) dates this petition to 'Probably c.1315'. See also SC 8/8/368. A note on the petition dates it to 1315, which seems very early, presumably based on CFR 1307-19 p.225, dated 14 January 1315, though it is difficult to see how this affects the dating of this petition.
