Description
Petitioners
Nicholas Haldan; John de Manesere; William de Hastings.
Name(s)
Haldan; de Manesere; de Hastings, Nicholas; John; William
Addressees
King.
Nature of request
Nicholas Haldan, John de Manesere and William de Hastings state that they are hostages in Scotland, guarantors of the payment of a ransom of four hundred pounds promised to the Scots by the people of the Vale of Pickering when the Scots last raided the area. This should have been paid by the Christmas after the Scots left, but has not been paid, so Nicholas and his companions fear for their lives. They request a writ to levy the money from the people of the area, to save their lives and limbs.
Nature of endorsement
Trustworthy people are to be appointed in Chancery to inquire into the truth of the contents of the petition and of other relevant documents, and the inquisitions are to be returned in Chancery. If what the petition says is true, a writ is to be sent to the sheriff of Yorkshire, ordering him to levy the money from all those who assented to this ransom, in proportion to each person's tenements, goods and chattels. And when it has been levied, it is to be given to a person or persons to be chosen by the people of the country, to take to Scotland.
Places mentioned
Scotland
Vaal de Pykring (Vale of Pickering), [North Riding of Yorkshire].
People mentioned
[Henry de] Percy.
Note
The petition is dated to 1325 on the basis of CCR 1323-1327, p.403 which is dated at Langdon, 1325 August 30. PROME, Appendix of Unedited Petitions, 1307-1337, Rotuli Parliamentorum I, pp. 416-429, no. 21 says 'the writ for the inquisition is dated 18 July 1325'. In CIM 1307-49 p.222 (no. 891) the commission is dated 4 July 18 Edward II (1325) and the inquisition itself was held the same month, on the Monday before St James.
