Description
Petitioners
Community of Yorkshire.
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
The community of Yorkshire states that the king has granted his protection to several people who then remain in the country, delaying poor people of the county from their right in long suits, and deceiving the king and his people. They request that certain people of the county be assigned to enquire into people who say that they have gone to the war in Gascony, or will go, and do not, and to do what the law demands. Two justices are named below.
Nature of endorsement
Anyone who feels himself to have been harmed by this is to come to Chancery and name the person who has received protection and remained; and he will have a remedy.
Places mentioned
Yorkshire
Gascony, [France].
People mentioned
Alexander de Cave, justice
Robert de Scoreburgh (Scarborough), justice.
Note
Date given on the evidence of Rot. Parl. JRS Phillips (PROME, Appendix of Unedited Petitions, 1307-1337) says that these petitions probably all do belong to 18 Edward II, although there is no indication that they were presented either at the non-parliamentary assembly of October 1324 or the parliament of June 1325.
