Reference
SC 8/7/350
Date
[1321-1322]
Description
Petitioners
Robert de Haliwell, clerk of the king's Chancery.
Name(s)
de Haliwell, Robert
Addressees
King and council.
Places mentioned
Wales
Nature of request
Robert de Haliwell states that he has served the king and his father well for thirty-two years and more, in Chancery and elsewhere, and that he has been sent overseas to several countries, and has received no advancement, to the dishonour of the court. He requests that the king give power and permission to the Chancellor to give him some rent of Holy Church, the first that becomes available, assessed at 30 marks, for his sustenance, in consideration of his long service and in compensation for the church in Wales which the king made him resign, promising him an equally good church in England, and also for the promises the king has previously made him.
Nature of endorsement
Coram rege. It is decided in council that it would be alms to have regard for his advancement, for his great and long labour. A watch is to be kept for a suitable church becoming available, and the king is to be informed, and he will consider the matter.
Note
PROME, Appendix of Unedited Petitions, 1307-1337, Rotuli Parliamentorum I, pp. 416-429, no. 15 dates this to 'probably 1321-1322', which is likely to be the case if it dates from about three years before SC 8/7/349 - in that petition he claims 35 years service, here 32. CPR 1317-21 p.215 is dated at York, 22 October 1318: it is only one of a number of presentations of people called Robert de Haliwell to benefices made in that volume of CPR, but is the only one in Wales, so might be that church in Wales which he claims he was forced to resign.
