Reference
SC 8/7/347
Date
[1324-1325]
Description
Petitioners
Burgesses of Newcastle-under-Lyme.
Addressees
King.
Nature of request
The burgesses of Newcastle-under-Lyme make two requests:1) They state that they hold their town of him by charter, for the farm of 40 marks, which is not specified in their charter; they request confirmation of the charter, with mention of the farm.2) They ask not to be put on inquests, assizes or juries with foreigners concerning foreign matters, and that no foreigner be put on inquests, assizes or juries with them concerning matters concerning the town, or things done in the town, unless they concern the king, his heirs, or the community of the town. This bill was answered by the king at his last parliament in London that he would consider the matter: so they request his grace by making a fine to the king.
Nature of endorsement
Coram rege. The king still wishes to consider this.
Places mentioned
Newcastle-under-Lyme, [Staffordshire].
Note
Date given on the evidence of Rot. Parl. vol. I, p.418b, no. 6. JRS Phillips (PROME, Appendix of Unedited Petitions, 1307-1337) says that these petitions probably all do belong to 18 Edward II, although there is no indication that they were presented either at the non-parliamentary assembly of October 1324 or the parliament of June 1325.This, however, since it refers to the petition being presented at the last parliament in London - that is, the assembly of October 1324 - was certainly presented since that parliament, and probably in June 1325.
