Reference
SC 8/7/343
Date
[1324-1325]
Description
Petitioners
Nicholas de Hungerford
Name(s)
de Hungerford, Nicholas
Addressees
King and council
Nature of request
Nicholas de Hungerford states that Blanche, formerly Queen of Navarre, gave him the keepership of the chase of Duffield, for the good service which he did to Edmund, earl of Lancaster her husband, to hold for life, receiving ten pounds annually, and that this was confirmed by Thomas, earl of Lancaster. When Thomas' lands were taken into the king's hand after his death, the king ordered the keeper of the forfeited lands in those parts by writ to allow the keepership to be held as before. Now, however, Nicholas has been expelled from this, and requests a remedy.
Nature of endorsement
On recto: It is to be enquired whether he kept the chase well or not, and if it is found that he has, and has served the king well, then it is the king's will that he have it in future, or compensation elsewhere. On dorse: Coram domino rege. When the rolls of Chancery have been examined, and if it is found that such a writ was addressed to Roger de Belers then keeper, as below, let him have a writ as previously and let justice be done to him.Afterwards it was attested before the council that the lord king has granted the same keepership to John de Denum who now holds it: therefore before the king (coram rege).
Places mentioned
Duffeldfrith (Duffield forest), [Derbyshire]
People mentioned
Blanche, queen of Navarre
Edmund, earl of Lancaster
Thomas, earl of Lancaster
Roger de Belers
John de Denum
Note
Date apparently given on the evidence of Rot. Parl. vol. I p.418a, no. 4. As this petition quotes the instructions given in CCR 1318-1323, p.449 (dated at York, 1322 May 18) it is clearly later: equally clearly, it is before the death of Edward II. JRS Phillips (PROME, Appendix of Unedited Petitions, 1307-1337) says that these petitions probably all do belong to 18 Edward II, although there is no indication that they were presented either at the non-parliamentary assembly of October 1324 or the parliament of June 1325.
