SC 8/7/339
Date

Description
Petitioners
Robert de Clifton.
Name(s)
de Clifton, Robert
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
Robert de Clifton states that the keepers of Nottingham castle have dug two trenches in his meadows at Wilford, and built four gorces between his lands and the river Trent there, by which the river has been diverted out of its course, and passes through his meadows and pastures to the king's mills belonging to the castle. Because of this his lands are flooded, the keepers dig and take peat there to improve and support these gorces, and the vill of Wilford, which is in Robert's demesne, is at risk of being washed away. He has damages of ten pounds, formerly fifteen pounds, annually, but the king has a profit of twenty pounds annually from the four mills, which he would lose if the trenches were filled in, as was found by an inquisition before Richard de Whatton and Richard de Willoughby by commission of Chancery, which was returned in Chancery and of which the tenor is attached to this petition. He requests an allowance for his damages, and, in compensation, the bailiwick of the honour of Peveril, in the counties of Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire.
Nature of endorsement
Because this touches the king so personally and because the said inquisition was only held ex officio, let certain great men of the king's council be appointed to examine and enquire into the matter, and to inform the king.
Places mentioned
Nottingham, [Nottinghamshire]
Wilford, [Nottinghamshire]
Lewe de Trente (River Trent)
Peveril, [Derbyshire].
People mentioned
King's keepers of Nottingham castle
Richard de Whatton
Richard de Wilughby (Willoughby).
Note
Dated to 1325 on the guard of the petition, on the evidence of Rot. Parl., CIM 1307-49 p.210 (no. 840) and CCR 1327-1330, p.83 given at Westminster, March 10, 1327. The commission in CIM 1307-49 p.210 (no. 840) is dated at Nottingham, 12 December 18 Edward II (1324), and the inquisition was taken on the Tuesday after St Hilary (January 1325). This would appear to be the inquisition mentioned in the petition, although no mention is made in CIM 1307-49 p.210 (no. 840) of the value of any likely losses to the king of the profit from his mills.
