SC 8/7/330
Date

Description
Petitioners
Community of Norfolk and Suffolk.
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
The community of Norfolk and Suffolk complain that the prior of Our Lady of Thetford has a charter in which it is contained that neither the prior or any of his tenants, free or villein, is to be impleaded in any court other than the king's court or the prior's own court. But there are many pleas which can only be heard in the courts of the county, shire or hundred where the trespass was committed: so the prior and his men commit crimes more boldly, knowing that they will not be punished. They request a remedy, as this item in the charter is against law and reason, and greatly oppresses the community.
Nature of endorsement
Anyone who feels himself to be harmed by this should sue in Chancery and have a remedy there at common law.
