Description
Petitioners

Addressees
King and council.
Occupation
Abbot of St Osyth
Nature of request
The abbot of St Osyth states that the constables of the hundred of Stow in Suffolk, at the command of the sheriff, as they say, have seized the abbot's manor of Stowmarket, and everything he has in that hundred, into the king's hand, until he has satisfied them for the sum with which they have assessed him, for not swiftly sending men at arms to the king's aid at Burton-upon-Trent, although he had sent an allowable excuse to the king's court, and the promise to give satisfaction and to do what he could. Now, on the sheriff's authority, they have assessed him with finding men at arms to send to the king's aid at Newcastle upon Tyne, and will not let his people work on his manor, or his other possessions in Suffolk, until he has given them security that he will send men to the king's summons at the octave of Trinity next. He requests a remedy.
Nature of endorsement
With regard to the seizure of the manor etc. it is to be ordered that if it is for that reason and no other, it is to be released etc. With regard to the summoning of men for Newcastle upon Tyne, that is an act of the common council in parliament.
