Description
Petitioners
Joan de Burwey, the widow of John de Burwey.
Name(s)
de Burwey, Joan
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
Joan, the widow of John de Burwey complains that Warren de Bassingbourn and his companions named above, with twenty others, who said they were with the king, at Warren's procurement came to John de Burwey's house in Steeple Morden, and lay in wait for him night and day until they found him, and then beat and wounded him until he was dead. They still threaten her and her household with death, if she should sue against them - to such an extent that she does not dare to live anywhere in that country - and they do this through the power which Warren has from Bartholomew de Baddesmere, from whom he has twenty pounds a year and his robes. She states that Warren also brought Bartholomew de Badlesmere [...] with three hundred armed men, against the king's prohibition, out of Essex over the Thames to Kent as far as Malling [...] Bartholomew made his assemblies. She requests that she might be able to sue in the king's court in safety, and that justice might be done to her.
Nature of endorsement
She is to sue at common law if she wants to.
