Description
Petitioners
William de Burwei (Burwey).
Name(s)
de Burwei (Burwey), William
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
William de Burwei complains that Warren de Bassingbourn, Roger his son and twenty-eight others, who are unknown, came to John de Burwey's house in Steeple Morden, killed him, badly wounded Wiiliam, and took his goods and chattels to the value of ten pounds. They said that they were with the king, and so no attachment was made against them, and this was also through fear of Bartholomew de Baddesmere, as Warren was his man, taking twenty pounds and his robes a year from him. Therefore he has never dared to sue, but Bartholomew is now dead, and he requests a remedy, that he might be able to sue Warren and his abettors in safety.
Nature of endorsement
He is to sue at common law if he wants to.
Places mentioned
Steplemordon (Steeple Morden), [Cambridgeshire].
People mentioned
Warren de Bassingburne Bassingbourn)
, Roger [de Bassingburne (Bassingbourn)] son of Warren de Bassingbourn
John de Burwey (Burwei)
Bartholomew de Baddesmere (Badlesmere).
Note
The petition is dated to 1322 because it is clearly in the aftermath of the failed baronial revolt as the petition makes reference to the death of Bartholomew de Badlesmeres, one of the major rebels executed after the revolt. One of a collection of petitions published on pages 387ff of Rot. Parl., vol I., which all seem to date from around 1322. This dating is confirmed by PROME, Appendix of Unedited Petitions, 1307-1337, Rotuli Parliamentorum I, pp. 387-415, which dates these petitions to 15 or 16 Edward II (1321-1323).
