Reference
SC 8/7/316
Date
[1321-1322]
Description
Petitioners
William de Widdeslade (Wydeslade), citizen of London.
Name(s)
de Widdeslade (Wydeslade), William
Addressees
King and council.
Places mentioned
Loundres (London)
Almaine (Germany).
Nature of request
William de Widdeslade states that he has long sued in the king's court an arrest against the people of certain towns in Germany, for a robbery made against him of goods to the value of three hundred pounds, and that this arrest was adjudged by assent of the council in the Lincoln parliament, five years ago and more, and his damages then assessed on oath by certain merchants at a hundred pounds. At this time the said merchants came into court and said that they had enough to say to foreclose William from the execution of this arrest, and ever since then they have harassed him with protection and false exceptions, and delayed his delivery of the goods adjudged to him. He requests that the king command the chancellor to give him a writ to have his damages reassessed by good and loyal people, and that satisfaction be made to him for what is in arrears of these goods, together with the reassessed damage.
Nature of endorsement
The petition is to be delivered into Chancery, and what is rightly to be done is to be done.
Note
This petition was delivered five years and more after the Lincoln parliament of January 1316, which would make the date of 15-16 Edward II (1321-1323) suggested by Rot. Parl., vol I p.387ff and PROME, Appendix of Unedited Petitions, 1307-1337, Rotuli Parliamentorum I, pp. 387-415 seem about right.CCR 1318-23 pp.45-47 is dated at York, 20 December 1318, and the other orders are dated 28 January 1317 (CCR 1313-18 pp.392-393), 22 March 1317 (pp.398-399), 23 June 1319 (CCR 1318-23 p.89), 11 November 1318 (p.106), 15 August 1319 (p.155), 17 September 1319 (pp.158-159), 23 July 1320 (p.248), 22 January 1322 (p.414).
