Description
Petitioners
Abbot and convent of Westminster.
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
The abbot and convent of Westminster state that it was granted by the charters of the king's ancestors that if any tenant of the abbey or of its cells should forfeit the fee which he holds of the abbey or its cell, then they can put this tenant in seisin of these fees, and have these fees, notwithstanding the year and day which the king should have from the fees of fugitives and felons. Now, however, the tenements which Henry Tyeys held of the abbot and convent in the hamlet of Noke near Islip in Oxfordshire have been taken into the king's hand because of his forfeiture. They request that they might be able to enter and have these tenements.
Nature of endorsement
The king is not yet minded to do this.
Places mentioned
Westminster
Le Oke (Noke), Oxfordshire
Istlep (Islip), Oxfordshire.
People mentioned
[William de Curtlington, abbot of Westminster]
Henry Tyeys.
Note
The petition is dated to 1322 because it is clearly in the aftermath of the failed baronial revolt, Tyes being one of the prominent rebels who was executed and forfeited. One of a collection of petitions published on pages 387ff of Rot. Parl., vol I., which all seem to date from around 1322. This dating is confirmed by PROME, Appendix of Unedited Petitions, 1307-1337, Rotuli Parliamentorum I, pp. 387-415, which dates these petitions to 15 or 16 Edward II (1321-1323).
