Reference
SC 8/7/304
Date
[1322]
Description
Petitioners
Aubyn de Clynton (Clinton).
Name(s)
de Clynton (Clinton), Aubyn
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
Aubyn de Clynton complains that John and Phillip de la Beche, together with others under their command, came with force and arms to the vill of Yattendon and took his goods there including armour, silver spoons, brooches and other jewels, corn, and livestock. Because of their power and threats, he was never able to sue at common law, but now they have been forfeited, and their goods and chattels are in the king's hand. As they are in the king's power, he asks that they answer for this trespass.
Nature of endorsement
He is to have a writ at common law.
Places mentioned
Yatyngdene (Yattendon), Berkshire.
People mentioned
John de la Beche, (Beech)
Phillip de la Beche (Beech), father of John de la Beche.
Note
The petition is dated to 1322 because the petition is clearly in the aftermath of the failed baronial revolt, and the forfeiture of the Beches was as a result of this. One of a collection of petitions published on pages 387ff of Rot. Parl., vol I., which all seem to date from around 1322. This dating is confirmed by PROME, Appendix of Unedited Petitions, 1307-1337, Rotuli Parliamentorum I, pp. 387-415, which dates these petitions to 15 or 16 Edward II (1321-1323).
