Date
[1322]
Description
Petitioners
Executors of Piers atte See of Ravenser Odd.
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
The executors of Piers atte See of Ravenser Odd request a remedy against Robert Romayn, formerly the king's purchaser, who in the twelfth year of the king's reign, took from Piers, as he lay dying, meat and fish to the value of ten marks, for the king's benefit. They have a tally made by Robert for this, but they have not been paid - preventing them from executing Piers' testament, contrary to the law of Holy Church and their own oath - even though Robert has received the money for this from the wardrobe.
Nature of endorsement
They are to have a writ formulated for their petition, and returnable before the king.
Places mentioned
Ravenserodde (Ravenser Odd), [East Riding of Yorkshire].
People mentioned
Piers atte See of Ravenser Odd
Robert Romayn, formerly purchaser for the king.
Note
One of a collection of petitions published on pages 387ff of Rot. Parl., vol I., which all seem to date from around 1322. This dating is confirmed by PROME, Appendix of Unedited Petitions, 1307-1337, Rotuli Parliamentorum I, pp. 387-415, which dates these petitions to 15 or 16 Edward II (1321-1323).CCR 1318-23::p.325 is dated at Langley, 14 August 1320, mentions the executors of Piers atte See, so he must have been dead by then. CCR 1318-23 p.396 is a letter to the bailiffs of Ravenser Odd on the same matter, dated at Westminster, 26 August 1321. It mentions the complaint of Piers atte See, amongst others, but not that he is dead. The petition seems likely therefore to date to 1322.
