Nature of request
Hugh de Courtenay states that Matthew son of John and his ancestors held the manor of Stoke, with its appurtenances, of Hugh and his ancestors, of the honour of Plympton, from time immemorial, through homage, fealty, the services of a knight's fee, and suit of his court of Plympton every three weeks. The manor came into the hand of the king's father because of Matthew's wrongdoing, and he gave it to Ralph de Monthermer and the heirs of his body legitimately begotten, to hold of the king, thus ousting Hugh, and barring him from his true possession and his services. He requests a remedy.

One of a collection of petitions published on pages 387ff of Rot. Parl., vol I., which all seem to date from around 1322. This dating is confirmed by PROME, Appendix of Unedited Petitions, 1307-1337, Rotuli Parliamentorum I, pp. 387-415, which dates these petitions to 15 or 16 Edward II (1321-1323).
